Work for the Dole at Computerbank
Computerbank Victoria runs a successful Work for the Dole Program called "GNU Recycle IT". This program runs on Wednesday and Thursday.
This project offers participants a range of activities to choose, from including advanced technical projects, testing computer components, repair and rebuild, installation and configuration of GNU/Linux software, recycling, system testing, training of recipients in group settings, user support, writing documentation, office administration, research work, web design and more.
Within this program we provide:
- Training that will enable participants to test, repair and rebuild computer systems
- Training and hands-on use of the GNU/Linux operating system, at both the end-user level and at a more technical "guru" level
- Opportunities to meet interesting and highly skilled people, including Linux software developers
- Assistance with resume preparation and access to the Internet to search for job vacancies
- Individual skills development
- Training in other areas, including Web design and office administration
If you are interested in finding out more about the program, please talk to the Program Manager.
Important Note: There is a Work for the Dole participant version of this guide; it contains Work for the Dole specific information. It is distributed to all Work for the Dole participants.
Interesting Fact: GNU Recycle IT was shortlisted to win the Work for the Dole Activity of the Year award for 2001. We didn't win, but we were listed in the Achievement Awards Book for 2001. Wow! Unfortunately, the Department of Workplace Relations (DEWR) misspelt our program name and called it ONU Recycle IT. A copy of the Awards book is in the front office.
