Overview

This guide is designed to give new Linux users an introduction to:

This guide is a self study guide; trainees self direct their learning using the links and information recommended in this guide.

Trainees are encouraged to bring in any work or projects that could be used to practice some of the skill areas covered in this guide. This could include:

  • Assignments from TAFE, University or high school
  • Letters, posters, invitations or other items that can be formatted using a word processor application
  • Address books or other list items that can be computerised using a spreadsheet application or database application

Where we provide a link to another place (whether it be a tutorial or a resource) we also include the exact URL location so that you can write it down for future reference.

TIP: If you wish to keep this guide open while following inks to other pages - you can use your mouse to right click over a link. Doing this will bring up a menu that will allow you to choose the option "open link in new tab". This will open a new browser tab onto the page that you would like to look.

Practice Material

If you are a bit stuck for material to use, we have provided some files below.  You can download these files by clicking on the links to them. Be careful to remember where you are saving them

Clicking on a file name above will invoke a dialog box that will ask you what you would like to do with the file that you are about to download to your hard disk or floppy disk. Select the option "save file to disk" and choose a directory in which to put the file in (Note:* you will need to remember where you put it for when you need to open it). Hint:** If you have a  floppy disk - save the file to your disk. Once the file download is complete you should be able to locate the file and open it.
