How to: Resetting a User Password

Overview
This document describes how to reset a user password on a Computerbank computer.

Case 1: User can log in to their account (ie autologin is still working)

1. Open a konsole by clicking K->System->Konsole (Terminal Program).
2. Type passwd and then press enter.
3. Enter a new password and then press enter.
4. Enter the password again and press enter. If the passwords matched you will see a message advising that the password has been updated successfully.

Case 2: User can not log in in to their account

1. Press CTRL+ALT+F1 simultaneously.
2. Login as root and press enter.
3. Enter the root password and press enter.
4. Type passwd user and then press enter. Substitute another username if you need to reset another account.
5. Enter a new password and then press enter.
6. Enter the password again and press enter.  If the passwords matched you will see a message advising that the password has been updated successfully.
7. To get back to the login screen, press ALT+F7 simultaneously.
