Tips for Using DVD's

Author: K. Davies Date: 30/09/2006

Overview

This document provides a few tips for using DVD burners and players.

  • Always read the help documents first. There are some really good step by step how to's included in the help system.
  • DVD burners can burn both CD's and DVD's.
  • K3B is used for burning CD's and DVD's.
  • DVD readers can read both CD's and DVD's but not burn them.
  • VLC (Video Lan Client) is used for playing DVD's. KSCD is used for playing music CD's. Refer to the user guide for more information.
  • DVD's hold around 4-8GB depending on whether they are single or double density. In comparison, CD's hold around 700mb.
  • DVD's will become damaged if exposed to heat or strong sunlight. They are not as robust as CD's and are affected by smaller scratches more quickly. Always keep them in a protective cover to ensure they last longer.
  • DVD's/CD's hired or purchased from a shop can not be copied without breaking the law. Computerbank can not advise you how to do this.
  • Unless your DVD/CD media is read writable (marked with RW) you can not burn over it twice.
  • You can use the multisession feature in K3B if you would like to add more content to a DVD or CD at a later date. Select multisession from the options. To add extra content at a later date select the 'continue multisession' option.
  • If you install Windows some additional software needs to be installed to operate your DVD burner. We do not supply this software but it is easy to obtain from the internet and is sometimes included in PC magazines available at newsagents.
