Getting iPod software for Linux

You will need a program called Gtkpod installed on your computer to allow you to add and remove songs from your iPod. Gtkpod is available in Debian software repositories on the internet. Use Synaptic Package Manager to download it.

Getting it to Work

  1. Connect your iPod using the USB cable to the USB port on your computer.
  2. Double click on the iPod icon on the desktop to mount your iPod. You should see a Konqueror window popup. The iPod icon will have a small green triangle next to it to indicate that it is mounted (in use).
  3. Go to KMenu -> Multimedia and click on the GtKPod program to start GTKpod.

Adding Music to an iPod

Click on the iPod in the left pane, then click on the +Files icon. A window will appear and you will be able to browse to your mp3 folder. Click on a file and select open and the file will transfer on to your iPod

Saving Music to an iPod

Once you have selected mp3's click the sync button and wait until it finishes (this could take a few minutes depending on how many songs you choose). You may get a warning about image files, click ok and ignore it (it is trying to find images
from the iTunes Store).

Removing an iPod

Close the GTKpod application. Close the Konqueror file manager. Right click the iPod icon on the desktop and then click unmount. You can then safely remove your USB cable and start listening to music on your iPod.
