How To: Testing CD Burners

Overview

This document explains the process of testing a CD burner. Before you start locate the CD/DVD tester. It is usually found under the benches in the buildroom.

Instructions

  1. Connect CD burner to the computer. Boot computer.
  2. If necessary, press F1 to save changes and continue boot.
  3. Put multisession or blank CD in to the burner, choose cancel when asked what to do.
  4. Start K3b.
  5. Take note of writer speed verification.
  6. Press ok.
  7. Select new Data CD Project
  8. Drag and drop the Linux user quidefile from desktop folder into the data CD project window. Select Burn. Note any messages. Select the final burning speed. It may be slower than first reported.
  9. When finishes (success, trumpets and all that jazz), select Close.
  10. Shutdown the computer.
  11. Disconnect the device and record the burner speed on the burner using a permanent marker. Also include the date tested and the word OK.
  12. Place burner in cupboard underneath the cloning bench.
  13. Repeat the steps for all burners to be tested.
