How To: Testing Modems

1. Set up near the phone line. Grab an untested modem and attach it to the computer.

2. Go to K -> Internet -> Internet Connection Tools -> Configure Internet Connection.

3. Enter root password when prompted.

4. The setup utility starts. Press any key.

5. Enter the following information when prompted:

ISP Name:          Optus

Modem Device:   This is usually auto detected. If not for external modem use /dev/ttyS1 (might be different for you!) and for internal try /dev/ttySM0 (zero)

ISP Number:       0198 331 111
Username:           [anything]
Password:            [anything]
Are these details correct?  Y
(press any key)

6. Go to K -> Internet -> Internet Connection Tools -> Connect to the Internet to attempt the connection. You may want to create a desktop shortcut. If you do please remove later.

7. Use CD light on modem to see if connected or not; KDialog might be wrong (the script is timing out).

8. Disconnect connection by clicking K -> Internet -> Internet Connection Tools -> Disconnect from the Internet. You may want to create a desktop shortcut. If you do please remove later.

Not working?

Open up a Konsole (K->System->Konsole) and become the root user by typing the command 'su'. Enter root password when prompted. Type the command 'watch plog' to see what it happening with the connection.

NB: Above number will only allow you to browse the Optus ServiceNet captive portal. It does not give you full access to the internet.
