Technical and Distro Report Oct 2006
Ok have a few things to report
1/ We have had a fairly good
experience with the new distro, and except for a few bugs cropping up
in the last few months its been fairly stable.
2/ I have finally
gotten a Kernel to complie and more importantly boot, I had to do this
to get nVidia cards working for Software Freedom Day and since then
have been experimenting with adding a few things to a custom kernel inc
Lucent/Agere Winmodems, Better sound support for games, and maybe once
i am comfortable with it, removing a load of drivers we don't need (
There will always be a full kernel included but not in lilo.conf in
case someone needs something we have removed).
3/
One of the major bugs we have encountered (also reported on in user
support report) was that VLC seems to have trouble playing VCD's and
some .mov's, I have looked into this and have found that the best fix
is installing XineUI, Xine has a new version that seems much more
stable and has a wider range of files it will play, this is good for us
because Xine is one of the better looking and easier to navigate media
players in linux, so easier to show how to use.
4/ SFD. We put together a pair of high end Linux Gaming
Machines for SFD, these included a custom compiled kernel and support
for nVidia AGP Drivers, we also built a Video Editing Machine for CMS
from the same clone. All machines performed well and CMS were very
happy with the editing machine they got.
5/ An addition to the Lucent/Agere Winmodem reference. We also
have a largish number of Conexant Chipset Modems that will work fine
with Linux, unfortunatly they are only supported by Proprietry Drivers
which cost US$20 per Modem. I am currently looking for a supplier of
Lucent/Agere Winmodems to supplement our small stock of external and
internal modems
And thats it.
