Documentation and Websites Reports

Not a big report this month.

Websites

Silva

One website issue occurred with the Silva site.  Saving using the floppy icon didn't work on Firefox at Computerbank, saving using the 'save document 'button worked.  This isn't a problem with Firefox on my home machine, still under investigation. Our Silva site is 30.7MB.

Plone

The general Plone site had no new issues. In an earlier report I said I was planning to update the Plone site by the middle of this year. Our version of Plone is 2.0-rc2 this is two years old, the current version is Plone 2.1.2.  Our Plone site is 14.6MB.   Updating Plone is quite complex especially when it includes third party products like the wiki and the issue tracker.

Plone code is an immensely dense piece of work, while loved by end users, developers tend to shudder when they go near it.  Open source developers around the world are working to make Plone Zope 3 compatible.  The major advantage will be that it will use Zope 3's component architecture. This means most of the code will be split into components and changes to one component won't impact on other unrelated components.

I recently updated my own newer Plone sites with assistance from a member of the Zope community - this took 3 weeks.

Unlike my hosted space we don't have root access to our Plone site so we would have to ask Obsidian to do most of the work  for us.  I am reluctant to ask them because they are giving us hosting for free. Our Plone site works fine I intend to not set any upgrade in process until there is a geniune need.

Currently both sites are manually backed up monthly.

Documentation

Jessica Pearce, a new volunteer has had cvi induction and a training session on Silva.  She is available for a couple of hours some Saturdays and can do some work cyberly.  Initially she is updating the old minutes and may move onto other cvi tasks later on.

Tony has prepared a draft checklist for the Training Room equipment.

Kylie has prepared draft guidelines for Volunteer Drivers delivering computers to recipients without transport.

I have updated the ISP dialup plans - still in draft mode and not publicly visible.

I have updated Printers for Linux - visible.

Additions (thanks Kylie for this info)

Installing the Computerbank distro over the network has been added.

Also in progress the internet checklist for user support.
