Netowrk Report November 2005
Here's some of the things I talked about in my network report, and a few
that I missed. If I missed anything feel free to let me know.
Since the last meeting the "/home" server has been replaced with a
new(er) Compaq machine. This seems to have all gone well with one mior
issue affecting sysadmins.
On Monday Rob & I will be picking up the hardware that has been pending
for the last few months, some small HP servers and Cisco switches. This
will let us consolodate our server and network hardware into a smaller
space and higher quality equipment. To get the exact switch configuration
we want we'll be picking up some extra switches and swapping modules.
The excess modules can then bew sold on ebay and should net around ~1000
per switch (we expect to need two extra switches).
With Con no longer being a regular that removes probably the closest
thing Computerbank had to an on-site sysadmin, however together Rob &
John have a very good knowledge of the network that should be enough for
any non-catastrophies.
Some other things:
* Getting a new phone system was mentioned, any ideas people? Any requests?
* Might we want to look at ATA-over-ethernet as a possible high speed
* cloning solution?
* User support
- Tracking of active support issues, I suggested RT
(request-tracker) and flyspray as two good tools.
- I mentioned putting the supoprt problem-tree into a wiki for
others to see and edit.
Also just to let people know, over the next few weeks I'll be migrating
to a new personal phone number, those who need it can contact me
privately for the details.
Thanks,
Julien
