I propose that we accept Mark Clohesy as a member of CAI.
New Volunteers
Sep - 18 new faces
Oct - 5 new faces to date
CAI-Vic is still running Volunteer induction days every 2nd and 4th Wednesday
of a month and every first Saturday of a month.
Computerbank Victoria Statistics for computer systems out to clients
Sept =19 systems out
Oct = 17 systems out to date
Currently - CAI-Vic has three network builds to do. These are for the
Menieres Support Group, Healesville Retirement Village, and a loan network
for the Autism Conference (Nov). These networks are still current. The
Menieres Support Groups Network is nearly complete. Thanks go to Tim Mc
Donald for his fine efforts here.
Donations
Cai-Vic experienced an increase in donations during the month of September
Around 130 computers and some peripherals were donated in September. We
received 100 x P166 from Teletech. Other donors included Haldata, Mothers
Direct, and Esso Credit Union.
So far there has been no follow up with Sun - reasons being that they are
difficult to catch and the contact we had been referred to has resigned and
moved on. I am awaiting another contact. There has also been no word from the
Melb Fire Brigade.
In October we picked up some equipment from Galileo; this was not the Pent
three we thought but a good donation with 22 odd Pentium 1's and 2's. We have
also received donations from a private school (Rob help??), RACV and Co
Invest.
Liaison and New Relationships
We still maintain a relationship with Recruitnet (Com IT), in more recent
times we have provided them with "desktop penguin" and install documents.
Recruitnet are keen to see desktop penguin 3 when it is ready.
Similarly, Breakaway Camps (camps for at risk youth) are interested in our
assistance with respect to providing suitable open source software to run on
some donated computers they have received (P100s). They will be coming back
to talk technical when desktop penguin 3 is ready. They are also interested
in receiving group training and training materials.
Teletech, the kind folk who donated 100 Pentiums, are interested in a staff
volunteer program. We may see some of them down at Computerbank soon.
The Skillsnet Association have also approached us with respect to open source
software. A meeting will be scheduled soon. They are interested in getting a
copy of desktop penguin 3 and . purchasing a copy of Debian 3.
Projects and Happenings
We still haven't been to a swap meet but we have certainly cleaned up and
gotten rid of a lot of non-essential or broken stuff. WELL DONE. This past
month has been great with a lot of effort being put into sorting and cleaning
Computerbank Victoria up. It looks fantastic and there is so much more space
and order.
We are still facilitating the placement of computers in the South Pacific, we
have just liaised with groups in Tonga and the Solomon Islands and now we are
talking to people in Samoa. The project will soon move into Papua New Guinea,
East Timor and then to Vietnam. Currently our role involves sending software,
documentation and training manuals as well as facilitating links between ANZ
branches to Rotary groups in South Pacific Regions where computers will
become available. Thus far we have seen some 623 computers placed into
schools within the region.
Currently we are looking for project money to send volunteers across to the
South Pacific. The purpose of this would be to facilitate skills transfer and
to look at networking possibilities.
Some of the projects happening within our Work for the Dole project include:
A recommended printer list update with current prices, a recommended scanners
list, Cheap ISP list, a Computerbank FAQ project, further documentation of
processes, the where is it? project. We are also trying to compile a list of
I/O cards that work with Linux with included driver/module information. A
hardware / electronics repair manual is also being created.
Finally KDE 3 is ready and is about to be rolled out at Computerbank
Victoria. Don't be surprised if you turn up and we have already upgraded.
Thanks go to Jamyz, and Grant.
We had a great awards celebration when Senator Tchen (A Federal Senator)
presented us with a highly commended Work for the Dole Award 2001 (in the
caring for the community section). Around 50 people attended and fun was had
by all. The Senator stayed and chatted for around two and a half hours.
Thanks go to Penni and Catherine for preparing a fabulous awards luncheon.
The food was enjoyed by all. Thanks also go to everyone who put in a sterling
effort in order to clean Computerbank up for the awards.
Finances
Do not have a report for this. Balance is approx $23,000 with 6888 owing as
per WFD grant money.
Critical Incidents
A computer was loaned to a Work for the Dole participant (authorised by
myself). The loan terms were 7 days. The computer was not returned and it was
subsequently found (through an informant) that the computer had been hocked
at a porn shop. The police were called and a positive ID could not be made on
the computer at the porn shop. The police will not pursue the matter until
the person is questioned by us re the return of the loan computer. The
person has not been questioned and still remains hard to catch up with. I
have made several attempts to visit the person at their home. This incident
remains unresolved and is still being followed up.
The other police matter with regards to a stolen laptop has been closed.
There is not enough evidence to continue.
